Make magic with wool

AUTUMN HOLIDAYS WITH WOOL

Did you know that sheep are sheared in late spring so that they don’t get too hot when summer arrives? During the autumn holidays, some of the wool actually ends up at the Øhavsmuseet, ready to be transformed with your help!

We have had sheep in Denmark for 6,000 years. At first, we were content to eat their meat, but we soon discovered that their fur was very good for keeping warm. So we began to find all kinds of ways to use the wool – both for practical purposes and for decoration.

In order for the wool to be used, it must first be carded, i.e. combed. Afterwards, the wool must be spun into a thread and perhaps dyed. Now the thread can be used for weaving, braiding ribbons or sewing, for example. This year, we are focusing particularly on weaving, and both children and adults can participate. We will be visited by people who are really skilled at working with wool, but it is also good to have your own adult with you.

The activities will take place from 13 to 17 October, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
