Christmas behind bars
In the dead of night, jail elves have been secretly decorating our cells for Christmas. To honour their work, we have decided to open for visitors between Christmas and New Year’s eve. Get an authentic insight into prison life and learn about justice and punishment.
Young and old alike can also go on a fingerprint hunt in real theft stories. Who were the thieves, and what did they steal?
We solemnly swear that we shall release you, when you have served your time.
Life behind bars
Learn about justice and punishment inside our town jail. Behind closed doors, you will get a taste of prison life as it was in the good old days and in recent times. Just the sensation of being behind bars gives rise to reflection among young and old alike. Challenge your opinion on the legal system, when you make your way around. Why do we lock up people? How are the conditions in a Danish jail? And what does justice mean? Such questions are likely to occur when you walk into the prison yard, the cells and the court of justice.
Jail for all ages
Families with kids are more than welcome. We have customized information for kids and a selection of worksheets to choose from. Younger kids may find this authentic museum a bit scary. Therefore, please consider if they will be comfortable with the activities.
Murder in the Jailhouse
The jailhouse and the courtroom form part of our permanent exhibition. Besides listening to the stories of former convicts and their relatives, you have the opportunity to rent an iPad. The iPad will help you solve “Murder in the Jailhouse” – a fictional murder mystery that takes place right after World War II. The game is targeted at older kids and adults. Afterwards, a visit to the court room will put you in the right mood for pondering about the meaning of punishment and the role of the judge, the lawyers and the jury.
Fire and Anguish
In the darkness of the basement, you can follow the true story of a young convict. From the time he gets a job on a local farm till he ends up in jail in 1905. Take a walk through this sinister exhibition, armed with just a shed light and accompanied by an interactive story-telling in English. The tour can hold up to 6 participants at a time. Therefore, please check for availability, when you pay your entrance fee.
