Arresten - The town jail

A WORLD BEHIND BARS

A visit to our Town Jail will take you to a world of justice and punishment from the old days till modern times. Being behind bars is an extraordinary experience that will evoke a lot of thoughts in young and old alike. Get an authentic insight into prison life, while exploring the cells, the yard, and the Courtroom. Here, you can challenge your own attitude to law. Why do we imprison people? And what is justice?

Jail for everyone

Families with kids are more than welcome. We have customized information for kids and a selection of worksheets to choose from. Younger kids may find this authentic museum a bit scary. Therefore, please consider if they will feel comfortable about a visit.

All year group tours

Group tours are offered throughout the year, inside and outside normal opening hours. In the old Courtroom, our guide will tell you about the unglamorous life in prison, and of course answer your questions. Then, you are set free to explore all corners of the historical jail and its courtroom.

Murder in the Jailhouse

The jailhouse and the Courtroom form part of our permanent exhibition. Besides listening to the stories of former convicts and their relatives, you have the opportunity to rent an iPad. The iPad will help you solve “Murder in the Jailhouse” – a fictional murder mystery that takes place right after World War II. The game is targeted at older kids and adults. Afterwards, a visit to the Courtroom will put you in the right mood for pondering about the meaning of punishment and the role of the judge, the lawyers and the jury.

Fire and Anguish

In the darkness of the basement, you can follow the true story of a young convict. From the time he gets a job on a local farm till he ends up in jail in 1905. Take a walk through this sinister exhibition, armed with just a shed light and accompanied by an interactive story-telling in English. The tour can hold up to 6 participants at a time. Therefore, please check for availability, when you pay your entrance fee.
